On the occasion of his 85th birthday

When you see him like that, you can hardly believe it. He still wags like a “youth” down the Fichtelberg, is physically active and mentally fit. It’s easy to forget that my father Eberhard will celebrate his 85th birthday tomorrow Tuesday!

A family man, loving father, grandpa, triple great-grandfather, sporty versatile, always purposeful, down-to-earth - these terms probably fit my father best.

In his life my father has undergone quite a few stations. From a youth sprint racer to multiple World Cup winner, from ski assistant coach to ski jumping coach, from Oberwiesenthal to the world. The first and only German victory in Kranjska Gora as well as the first German who wins the legendary Adelboden race are still vividly remembered today.

And that was almost 55 years ago. Incredible how time flies! The title of our joint book “Traces of Success” can hardly be stated more fittingly.

Skiing is still a fixed part of Dad’s life. He still tugs to the Fichtelberg for which he still lives at its foot. Last week, for example, when MDR visited him on the occasion of his 85th birthday for film recordings.

Seven times he conquered “his” mountain hill…

Dad, I wish you all the very best for your birthday! I hope you stay fit and vital for many more years. And of course many more times you will conquer the Fichtelberg!

Your son Peter
