Diary from Barcelona Day 4: Tomba 'La Bomba' like 'Ebs' Riedel 34 years earlier

BARCELONA, June 5, 2014 – Four giant slalom World Cup wins by the Italian Alberto Tomba (born 1966) in Alta Badia – only one in Adelboden, and that on February 4, 1995. Winking, I can say that my father and the great Alberto are on the same level. Eberhard “Ebs” Riedel had also triumphed once in Adelboden, on January 9, 1961.
At first glance this has nothing to do with the 49th FIS Congress, which is being held in Barcelona until tomorrow, Friday. On the other hand, it does: Albert Tomba was a guest star at the Austrian Ski Association's evening. The successful Ski World Championship in Schladming was toasted again and a hopeful look to the Nordic World Ski Championship 2019 was cast, which will be awarded tonight. Seefeld is one of four candidates and must compete with Oberstdorf, Almaty (Kazakhstan) and Planica (Slovenia). I am German, so for the Allgäu people, I am also a partner of the Austrian Ski Association, so I have – a little joke – a 'second chance'. But wherever the World Championship goes, I am convinced the organizers will do a great job in five years.
Tomba stood in the center of interest beside two fiery Flamenco dancers, and of course I did not miss the chance to exchange a few words with him and talk about Adelboden and my father. If he wants to know more, I suggested he flip through the book 'Traces of Success', our family chronicle.
Otherwise, the Austrian evening was filled with interesting conversations with Paul Ganzenhuber, Harald Haim and Günther Csar – absolute capacities in Austrian Nordic ski jumping and combined sports. We talked about the past, such as the Olympic Winter Games 2010 and 2014, and about the future, such as the opening of the Nordic Center Montafon at the end of June. See you there for the next discussions in a relaxed setting!
Spanish with Peter!
Gracias is one of the most important words in the Spanish language, just as 'thank you' is one of the most important words worldwide. We are treated friendly and courteously by all staff at the hotel and at the congress. Gracias! But what does world championship mean in Spanish? Tonight at 6:30 p.m., the organizers of the World Cup will be announced. I will inform very promptly on my Facebook page!
