Well, in principle all components are present. But for a top-class competition at this hill that complies with the regulations of the International Ski Federation – which specify, for example, how deep the starting track must be – you need a sometimes neglected instrument: an ice milling machine, an ice bogey.
To meet the new FIS regulations for the Four Hills Tournament 2012/13, Garmisch-Partenkirchen will soon receive a new ice milling machine from Peter Riedel. This one is entirely made of stainless steel, includes a newly developed drive unit and a likewise newly developed ice-working system with a special snow discharge.
Also new is the three-axis milling system, and also the special blades (which could be swapped for brushes) that further structure the ice. “This new device will sustainably improve the conditions for athletes on the track, from the first to the last jumper,” says company owner Peter Riedel. “The mill ensures more air under the running surface during the approach and thus further reduces the sliding friction coefficient.”
After the milling machine was ordered in spring, it will be accepted by the TÜV on December 3 together with the winch. A few days earlier, ice installation begins at the Olympic Jump in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Although no DVS national team training camp took place this year at this facility, with the ice track commissioned, perhaps some nations will still come to Garmisch for training.
One thing is certain: if you also own the ice milling machine from Peter Riedel GmbH, then, yes, you have all components together to stage exciting ski jumping!
