Today my father Eberhard Riedel is celebrating his 88th birthday - a special occasion to look back on an extraordinary life. For this reason MDR visited him today at Café König in Oberwiesenthal and dedicated a portrait to him that not only honors the man but also his impressive life achievement.

The focus is especially on his career as an alpine ski racer - a success story that radiated far beyond the Ore Mountains. My father became known as one of the DDR's best ski racers. His talent was evident early and eventually led him to international racing slopes. He participated in three Winter Olympics and also represented his country in the World Cup in the main alpine disciplines.

What is particularly memorable is his victory in the giant slalom at Adelboden in 1961 - an achievement that made him internationally known and earned him the nickname “Miracle from the Fichtelberg.” He also shaped an era in national competitions: as a multiple DDR champion he dominated alpine skiing for years. His achievements were all the more remarkable because he came from a region not viewed as a classic skiing terrain - yet he kept pace with the world elite.

However, the MDR portrait shows not only the successful athlete but especially the person behind the successes: a passionate athlete who has followed his path with discipline, courage and great down-to-earthness. Companions remember his perseverance, his ambition and how much he shaped alpine skiing in his homeland.

The visit to Café König is therefore far more than a birthday greeting - it is a tribute to a life full of commitment, athletic achievements and lasting imprints in winter sports.

Best wishes on your 88th birthday as well, Dad!
