In today’s highly technological and digital era, it is inevitable that digitalization also takes hold in the technical realm. It is not only inevitable, but also a great opportunity and immense ease to implement digital innovations and use them sensibly. This also applies to us in plant construction. In recent months, we have been feverishly searching for a solution to transfer a variety of parameters from ski jumping facilities, which are scattered worldwide, into a digital system. A system that enables remote maintenance and provides jump operators with valuable tools to read a variety of numbers, values, and parameters online.

What has emerged is a platform in which every ski jump operator gets a tailor-made user interface for themselves. On this “dashboard,” as such a system is called in the digital world, various parameters can be read and displayed in curve diagrams over various time periods. Values such as outside temperature, ice temperature, cooling system utilization, efficiency, and potential fault messages can be retrieved online. This is a massive relief for the jump operators, as they always know exactly how efficiently the technology is working and whether any adaptations are needed to ensure optimal jump operations. Some values can be used to generate statistics, as they are constantly measured and thus can be shown in practical curve diagrams over different time periods.

The master dashboard available to Peter Riedel GmbH maps the parameters of all jumps and thus enables quick and efficient reactions should certain values not match or a fault message appear. A Win-Win solution for our company as well as for all jump operators and a best-practice example of how cutting-edge technology is entering sports facility construction!

The platform is currently compatible only with newer-generation cooling systems, as these — in addition to lower environmental impact and higher efficiency — also have the necessary technical equipment. Currently the technology is installed at five jump facilities, with the Fichtelberg Ski Jump in my hometown of Oberwiesenthal following in April.

One should not resist constant further development, but actively shape it. Then, as you can see, really cool and innovative things are possible. All with one goal: for the sake of the environment!
